Got a move date? Check out our top packing tips to make your move go smoothly!

Our top tips for a stress free move,

Start early, start with the items/rooms you use least, like seasonal items in the loft and anything in the garage or shed.

Declutter, moving home is an ideal time to go through your belongings and get rid of items you no longer use or need, donate, sell or throw away.

Use up items that are not worth moving. eat what you can, donate unopened packets and tins, recycle or give away opened tins of paint and cleaning supplies.

Label boxes on the side and top in marker pen with which room they will be going into. Stack filled boxes going to the same room together so they can be loaded onto the truck at the same time.

Number the boxes and use different colour pen for each room.

Pack heavy large items at the bottom of boxes and wrap fragile items carefully in packing paper and bubble wrap. Use double walled strong cardboard boxes or look into hiring plastic crates.

Dismantle furniture Before the movers arrive and tape the fixings in clear sandwich bags to each item.

Don’t forget to pack an overnight bag and a couple of boxes of essentials including a screwdriver! so you can keep them close to hand. It’s also a good idea to keep some teabags, coffee and sugar out so you can make drinks on the day of the move.

Getting organised for your move? Facing a lifetime (or even a few years) worth of possessions can be daunting…  Follow our top tips to make your move as stress free as possible!

  1. Start early… Honestly the sooner you start, the better. Have a really good clear out, this will save you time and money in the long run.
  2. Check your home insurance just to make sure that you are covered in the event of accidental breakage.
  3. Look at the areas and that you don’t use everyday like the loft, shed, garage and spare rooms first and pack up the things that you won’t need first.
  4. Stock up on your packing boxes, make sure you get enough bubble wrap, tape and packing paper too.
  5. Start at the top and work your way down, room by room. Set yourself targets like pack up the contents of the loft in a weekend.
  6. Make sure not to over load boxes by making them too heavy, instead use smaller crates or double walled sturdy boxes for heavy items like books and heavy pans
  7. Label every single box with contents and which room it will be going to on the top of the box and the side as well. You will be so glad you did when you get to your new home!
  8. Make an essentials box with tea, coffee and all the things that you will need straightaway.
  9. Also pack an overnight bag, as above but include your toiletries, medication etc.
  10. Have a toolbox handy if you have dismantled your furniture yourself and put the screws and fixings in plastic bags and tape them to the furniture.
  11. Organise childcare and or pet care for the day of the move.
  12. Aim to have at least one room (like your bedroom and the kids rooms) set up, so you can relax in your own bed!

Fridays are the busiest day of the week for removals and the last Friday of the month  gets booked up quickly and sometimes months in advance!

We’ve put a few of the pros & Cons that we’ve found with removals on a Friday.

PRO’S

  • Move on a Friday and you have the weekend to unpack.
  •  It can be difficult to try to negotiate a change to a different day, when you are in a chain.
  • Solicitors can organise pre-completion work earlier during the week, to significantly lessen the chance of problems on moving day.

CON’S

  • You will usually only receive the keys to your new home, and legally gain access to the property  until after funds have cleared. The high volume of completions on Friday can result in delays and extra expense.
  • Your solicitor, estate agent, removal company and bank will be quieter midweek.
  • Sometimes mix ups happen with utility providers and other services, and new owners can spend their first weekend in their home without lighting or heating.
  • The banks money transfer systems can get busy, especially at the end of the month when many other transfers are in the system.
  • We have had some customers  that have had delays in their chain which meant that the 3. 30pm bank transfer cut off time was missed and have their move delayed until the following week.

Our advice would be if you can move on another day of the week, then it could well be worth your while!

Moving home this Christmas?

Moving in Winter has it’s challenges!! If snow is forecast, don’t panic… We successfully carryout removals all throughout the year.

Have a look at our top tips to moving home in the snow…

  1. Keep an eye on the forecast ,Snowing on the day of your move can be nerve wracking but with a little preparation you can make sure your move goes as smoothly as possible.
  2. Ask for carpet protectors from your removal company or cover your floor/ carpets to keep them clean.
  3. Grit your drive the night before your move and ensure ample access for the removal vehicles.
  4. Make lots of  hot drinks available for everyone involved in your move, also a biscuit or 2 always help keep morale high in our experience!!
  5. Don’t pack your winter coat! Make sure that you and everyone in your household have a warm coat and clothes in a separate bag so if there is a delay on your new property you will be prepared.
  6. Use suitable packing materials, think about hiring plastic crates for moving your belongings. Crates have many benefits over cardboard boxes, they are more durable and if it is raining (or snowing!!!) will keep your belongings safe and dry. Also when you have unpacked all your crates, You can arrange to have them collected which saves you the hassle of getting them recycled.
  7. Make sure your car is prepared for the drive, the tyres have tread etc, you have an ice scraper and a first aid kit and blankets as well!

Happy New Year!

Now Christmas is over and the new Year has begun, it’s a great opportunity to take a look around your home and decide if you really need all the stuff you have gathered over the years!

Now that the Christmas decorations are all packed away. Look at your home with fresh eyes, is it time to de-clutter and take back the space in your home.

If you are planning on selling your home this year, then a good tidy and perhaps a few home improvements can drastically improve your chances for a quick sale.

If you are moving house and using a removal company, then it makes sense to declutter now so you are not paying to have unwanted items moved. Have a look at these ideas for decluttering and you will save money on your house removals quote too.

So here are are our top tips to save you time and money this New Year:

Make a plan

Perhaps you have been in your home for many years and have collected many items with sentimental value over the years, so the task of sorting through and decluttering in itself can be a huge task, Look at your belongings with fresh eyes, We would recommend starting with your clothes over an afternoon and taking it from there ( if you have small children, it might be a good idea to arrange childcare for the afternoon!)

Be Clear on what you would like to keep, recycle, sell or bin

Have a system, many use the 6 month rule for clothes, likewise if you have clothes that do not fit you anymore, now is an great time to either sell or donate. It might be that you have stacks of boxes of kids things, a good way to tackle this is to separate the items that you want to keep for sentimental value or to pass on at a later date. Just make sure that you pack them up properly to store them safely out of the way. We would recommend going through the kids toys, when they are at school as it’s our experience that kids never want to part with anything ever!!

Get Organised

Now that you have done the hard work and decluttered, enjoy the space and be clever with your storage

Once you have sold your house, look at getting  quotes from reputable removal companies, with good customer feedback to take the hassle out of moving for you. Give us a call on 0115 8374120 to arrange your free, no obligation site visit or simply fill in our online quote request form.

Moving House with Kids? Check out our top tips!

We all know how stressful moving can be especially with kids! Here are our top tips to make sure your move goes as smoothly as possible!

  1. Arrange childcare for the day of the move. You will have enough going on and it’s much better for the kids to be looked after elsewhere so you can concentrate on moving house.
  2. Get your kids to help you pack a bag or box of toys that they will want to play with straight away at your new home and consider getting some new colouring books, puzzles, lego or books to keep them entertained when you get there.
  3. Consider hiring a removals company that offer a dismantling and reassembling service as you will need the kids (and your bed) set up at your new home as a priority.
  4. Pack an essentials box for them and clearly label it, including bedding, pyjamas, favourite toys and books and snacks so you have all you need for them to hand.
  5. Let them pick out a new duvet cover for their new room and let them help plan how their new room will look
  6. If you have little ones, make sure you child proof your new house, things like stair gates, cupboard locks and socket covers will keep them safe.
  7. Kids like routine and familiarity but they also love an adventure!

Moving Home? Read our moving home top tips to make sure your moving day runs smoothly and stress free!

2-3 months before the move…Clear your loft and garage if you have one and either recycle, donate, give away or sell anything that you no longer want or need any more. Use up or throw away open cans of paint.

6-8 weeks before the move…Get quotes from removal companies and decide whether you want to pack up yourself or get the removal company to do it for you. Confirm your moving date and aim to get a Monday- Thursday moving date as removal companies tend to get booked up on Fridays, weekends and end of the month first.

1 month before the move… Make a list of everyone you need to notify, Inform your utility providers your moving date and new address. If you are packing yourself, start collecting a good variety of different sized doubled walled cardboard boxes, small bags or containers, bubble wrap, tape, tissue paper, packing paper, shrink wrap, scissors and different coloured marker pens. Start packing non-essential items, clearly labelling them as you go.

2 weeks before the move…Confirm your removal date with the removal company and agree the start time.If you have decided to dismantle furniture yourself then make sure you dismantle outdoor furniture and climbing frames in preparation.

Aim to use up the contents of your freezer, Sort through the kitchen drawers, throw away clutter and goods past their sell by date. Put opened jars and bottles in plastic bags before wrapping. Pack plates vertically into boxes and use tea towels as extra protection. Dispose of any leftover hazardous materials and opened paint pots etc. Use up the fuel for petrol fuelled lawn mowers and power tools.

Organise childcare or a pet sitter for the day of the move, it will be one less pressure for you.

Arrange your post to be forwarded

Start Packing!!! Begin with items in rooms that you use the least, Remember not to overload boxes. Clearly label packed boxes on the side (so you can see what they are when they are stacked up) label the boxes with contents and which room they are going into, number the bedrooms at the new house so the removal team will know which room to put them in.  Also use clear sandwich bags to store screws and fittings to furniture you have dismantled and tape the bag to the furniture. Take photos of  the setup of cables behind your tv, so you can remember how to reset up at your new home.

The week before the move...Pack an overnight bag with the things that you will need straightaway, after the move, you will probably be too tired to unpack straightaway so it’s a really good idea to pack a change of clothes and toiletries, phone charger, important paper work and utility company information and also any valuables such as jewellery and laptops.

The day before the move… make an essentials box, Think about the all the things that you will need straight away, like kettle, tea, coffee, scissors, bin bags, screwdrivers, tin opener, toilet roll, snacks, a couple of cups, plates etc. Try to keep this box separate and clearly label it. If your moving with children, make them an essentials box each with a few of their favourite toys and books. Charge your phone!!!

The day of the move…Take final metre readings in your old property and new metre readings in your new property. Have a walk through room by room with the team leader of the removal team at your present address and let them know if you have any special requests! It could be an idea to leave your contact details for the new owners incase they need to contact you or forward any mail. Once at your new home make sure that the beds are assembled!!!
